Here, maybe a lil history lesson helps.
Norway is a small country demographically, with its 4,5 million people. Geographically, however, it is about the size of Japan or Great Britain. Norway is situated above the 58th parallel, and about one third of the country is located north of the Arctic Circle. The coastline is 20.000 km long, including fjords and inlets. The Norwegian climate is less severe than one might expect from its geographical location. The warm Gulf Stream flows northwards along the coast and saves us from the Arctic Tundra normal at such high latitudes. An interesting phenomenon in Norway is the seasonal change in the length of day and night in the northern part of the country. In midwinter, daylight lasts for approximately four hours in the North, while during the summer you will be able to see the sun 24 hours a day.
Norway is rich in beauty with its majestic mountains and fjords, its deep forests and patches of rich agricultural soil. It offers a unique combination of challenging work in a modern society and supreme recreation possibilities along the coast and in the mountains. The challenges from the shipping, fisheries and offshore businesses have stimulated to fast-growing technological developments. For students and other scholars, Norway and the other Nordic countries offer a wide variety of possibilities for research, study and leisure.
The history of Norway as a kingdom starts in the early Viking era, before 900 A.D. Since then, Norway has been in unions with both Sweden and Denmark. The Norwegian constitution dates from 1814, when Norway broke out of the union with Denmark only to be forced into a new union with Sweden. In 1905 the union with Sweden also came to an end. Norway is a constitutional monarchy. King Harald and Queen Sonja as well as their two children, Princess MÃ?rtha and Crown Prince Haakon are very popular.
Norway is not a member of the EU. Twice, in referendums held in 1972 and in 1994, the Norwegians voted against membership of the EU.
